Your Gate Motor Is Not Where You Should Be Saving Money

Why a quality automatic gate machine costs less over five years than a cheap one costs in two


There is a particular kind of frustration every Lagos homeowner with an automatic gate eventually understands.

It is 11:40pm. You are turning into your street after a long day. You press the remote and nothing happens. You press it again. Still nothing. Now you are sitting outside your own gate in the dark, engine running, waiting for a security man to come and manually drag a 300kg steel gate open — assuming the manual release even works.

The next morning you call a technician. He opens the control box, looks at the burnt board, and says the words nobody wants to hear: "Oga, this one has gone. You have to buy a new motor."

That is not a gate problem. That is a buying decision that was made months or years earlier, and it is finally presenting its bill.


The real cost of a cheap gate motor

Most people shop for gate automation the same way: they ask for a price, compare two or three numbers, and pick the lowest one. It feels like a smart decision at the time.

Here is what that decision actually buys you:

  • A motor that is undersized for your gate. A heavy sliding gate on a cheap operator will run — for a while. Then the strain shows up as slipping, stalling, overheating, and eventually a dead unit.

  • No parts, no support. When a no-name unit fails, there is nothing to replace. The whole thing is disposable. You do not repair it; you re-buy it.

  • Zero protection against your own electrical supply. This is the big one, and it is the reason most gate motors in Lagos die. More on this below.

  • Repeat installation cost. Every replacement means paying for labour, wiring, brackets, and setup all over again.


A gate motor bought at half the price and replaced twice in three years is not a cheap gate motor. It is an expensive one, paid for in instalments.


Lagos is hard on gate motors — and the electricity is the worst part

A gate operator installed in Lagos is not living an easy life. It is dealing with:

  • Unstable mains supply. Voltage that swings, current spikes, and the surge that comes with the changeover between NEPA and generator.

  • Dust and harmattan. Fine dust works its way into everything mechanical.

  • Rain and flooding. Ground-mounted units and control boxes take on water when drainage fails.

  • Heavy gates. Nigerian gates are built solid — thick steel, sometimes with cladding. That is real weight on the motor every single cycle.


Of all of these, the electrical issue is the one that kills the most motors, and it is the one people understand the least. A high current event in the house does not politely stop at your sockets. It travels. And in a poorly built gate operator, it goes straight to the board and the motor windings, and that is the end of the unit.

There is a second advantage that nobody mentions until they are standing at a broken gate: a blown fuse tells you what is wrong.

When an electronic board fails, it usually gives no sign at all. A dead board looks exactly like a working one — no burning, no discolouration, nothing visible. Diagnosing it means testing, guessing, and swapping parts until the fault is found, and every one of those hours is on your bill.

A blown fuse announces itself the moment the cover comes off. The technician sees it, replaces it, and the gate works. Visible failure is faster and cheaper to repair than invisible failure — and that difference shows up on the invoice.

A fuse is one of the cheapest components in the entire system. It is designed to be sacrificed. Replacing one costs a fraction of what a new motor costs, and it can be done quickly — no new installation, no new wiring, no new brackets, no full day without a working gate.

That is not an accident of manufacturing. That is what proper engineering looks like: the system is designed so that when something goes wrong, the failure lands on the part that is cheap and replaceable, not the part that is expensive and permanent.

Three of these numbers matter more than the rest, and they are worth explaining properly.

1600 kg — this is an estate-grade motor

Most residential gate operators sold in Lagos are rated somewhere between 400 kg and 800 kg. The ROY 16 handles twice that and more.

If you have a long sliding gate in solid steel, a gate with decorative cladding, an estate entrance, a school, a church, or a commercial compound, this is the class of motor the job actually requires. Putting an 800 kg motor on a 1200 kg gate is the single most common mistake we are called out to correct — and by the time we are called, the motor is usually already finished.

One honest caveat: 1600 kg is a maximum, measured on a gate that rolls freely. A gate binding on a worn roller or sitting on a bent track effectively weighs far more than it does on paper. The rating buys you headroom, not permission to skip maintenance.


360 W — it will run on your inverter

This is the specification we wish more people asked about.

At 230 Vac and 1.8 A, the ROY 16 draws only 360 W while running. For a motor moving over a tonne of steel, that is remarkably modest — and it has a very practical consequence in Lagos:

A properly sized inverter runs this gate through a power outage. This is not theory — we have the BAME DELMA units running on inverter power on client sites across Lagos. When NEPA goes, the gate keeps working.

So you are not stuck manually dragging a heavy gate open every time the light goes, and you are not starting a generator just to leave your own compound. It also means the motor is a light, well-behaved load on a generator during changeover.

And when there is no power at all, the emergency key release lets you unlock the motor and move the gate by hand in seconds.


IP 44 — and why installation position decides whether it holds

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit is protection against solid objects and dust; the second is protection against water. IP 44 means the unit is protected against solid objects above 1 mm and against splashing water from any direction.

For a Lagos compound, that is a sound rating for an above-ground operator — but only if it is installed properly. IP 44 protects against splashing rain. It does not protect against a motor sitting in standing water because the drainage at the gate backs up in July.

This is why we care as much about where the motor is mounted, how the plinth is raised, and how the cabling is routed as we do about the motor itself.


Do not skip the safety devices

A 1600 kg-rated motor closing a heavy steel gate carries real force. Photocells and a flashing warning light are not accessories — they are what stops the gate closing on a child, a pet, or the bonnet of your car.

A complete installation includes:

  • Photocells on both the internal and external side of the gate, so the gate reverses instead of closing on an obstruction

  • A flashing warning light, so anyone nearby can see the gate is about to move

  • Correct limit switch adjustment, so the gate stops where it should every time

  • A key switch, so the gate can be operated without a remote when needed

The manufacturer says this in writing — and it is worth reading twice

EN 12453 and EN 12445 are the European safety standards for powered gates. The ROY installer manual states that the product complies with them when it is installed by qualified personnel capable of evaluating risks.


That conditional clause is the whole point.

A certified motor is not a safe gate. It becomes a safe gate when someone competent assesses the site, positions the photocells correctly, sets the limits and the force properly, and installs the warning light. The manufacturer is explicitly saying that the certification travels with the installation, not with the box.

The manual makes the same point in another way: the basic wiring diagram it shows is labelled as a standard configuration that does not meet EN 12453. It is the minimum that will make a gate move — not the arrangement that makes it safe.


Why we quote safety devices separately

We price photocells, warning lights and the other safety devices as their own line items rather than burying them inside one bundled figure. That is deliberate, and it is worth explaining.

When everything is rolled into a single number, you cannot see what you are getting. Two quotes that look similar may contain completely different installations, and the only way to find out is when something fails. Itemising forces the conversation into the open: here is the motor, here is the installation, here are the safety devices, here is what each one costs and what it does.

It also means you decide. Some clients fit everything at once. Others start with the motor and add photocells in a second phase. Both are reasonable — what is not reasonable is finding out two years later that nobody ever offered them.

So when you compare quotes, do not just compare the bottom line. Ask directly: what safety devices are in this price, what is excluded, and who is assessing the risks on my site? A quote that comes in cheaper because those items were silently left out is not cheaper. It has simply moved a cost onto the first person who walks through that gate at the wrong moment.


What to actually look for when buying an automatic gate motor

If you are shopping — whether from us or from anyone else — these are the questions worth asking:

  1. Is the motor rated for the weight of my gate, with room to spare? Ask for the rating in kilograms and be honest about how heavy your gate really is.

  2. Is it protected against electrical faults? Ask specifically: if there is a surge, what part fails? If the answer is "the whole motor," walk away.

  3. What is its power consumption? A lower wattage means the gate can run on backup power.

  4. What is the IP rating, and where will it be mounted? IP 44 above ground is sensible. A unit sitting in a drainage path needs far more.

  5. Does the manual release work properly? You will need it during a total power failure. Test it before the technician leaves.

  6. Are photocells and a warning light included in the price?

  7. Can I get parts for this in Nigeria? A motor with no parts pipeline is a disposable motor.

  8. Who is installing it? Which brings us to the last point.

The best motor in the world will still fail if it is installed badly

We say this to clients constantly, sometimes against our own short-term interest: the machine is only half of the job.

Poor alignment, incorrect rack mounting, wrong limit settings, no proper earthing, an exposed control box, undersized cabling — any one of these will destroy a good motor and make it look like the motor was the problem.
